Commercial Pilot License PDF Print E-mail

Whether you are interested in working as a full time professional pilot or you are a private pilot seeking to enhance your flying skills, a commercial licence is one of the most challenging but rewarding experiences a pilot can achieve. Most private pilots acquire the required minimum flight training times within a few years of flying although qualifying flight hours can be accumulated in much shorter periods of time if desired. Attaining this licence is a key step to obtaining employment in the aviation field and it also allows recipients to engage a number of advanced aviation qualification courses.

 

The prerequisites for a commercial pilot's licence as prescribed by Transport Canada are as follows:

 

  • Applicants must be a minimum age of 18 years prior to the issuance of this licence. Training may begin prior to this age.
  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or a person lawfully admitted into Canada for flight training.
  • The applicant must hold a valid Private Pilot Licence issued in Canada or by a contracting state prior to commencing the training.
  • Prior to undergoing any Flight Tests or Written Examinations, the applicant must successfully complete a Category 1 Medical Examination performed by a Transport Canada approved Aviation Medical Examiner. (Ask staff for a list of Aviation Medical Examiner)

 

Training requirements for this licence are as follows:

 

Ground School

 

A minimum of 40 hours ground instruction is required. The commercial ground school course is generally held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for 3 hours from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Please check with our staff however to confirm course availability and timings.

 

Flight Training

 

A minimum of two hundred (200) hours consisting of:

  • 35 Hours dual (with instructor); and
  • 30 Hours Solo Note : These flight training times are based on Transport Canada minimums and more training may be required.

 

Graduation Requirements

 

  • The applicant must obtain a minimum of 60% on all four sections of the Transport Canada written examination - (CPAER).
  • The applicant must pass a Practical Flight Test conducted by a Transport Canada Designated Flight Test Examiner.
  • The applicant must satisfy all training criteria as outlined in the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).
  • Two hundred (200) hours total flying experience is required including 100 hours as Pilot-In-Command prior to the issuance of this licence. Graduation Privilages of the Commercial Licence Holder The commercial pilot licence entitles the holder to fly as Pilot-In-Command or Co-Pilot of an aircraft operated in a commercial air service. The holder may also exercise the privileges of a Private Pilot Licence, VFR Over-The-Top, or Night Rating on any class and type of aero plane endorsed on their licence that is not required to be operated by more than one pilot.
 

Quick Facts

Keep in mind, Canadian Flyers International provide a "Block Time" rates. Block rates with a 5% discount (plane only) are given once a customer has put a minimum of $2,000 CAD on their account. Bringing your plane (Cessna 172's) per hour down to $152 (CYTZ) and $128 (CNU8) respectively.
